5 Types of Photography You Probably Did Not Know About

Types of photography

Photography has been around for quite some time now, and over the years, this Artform has evolved exponentially. It has taken so many other forms, far from what one could have ever imagined, and evolved into multiple types of photography.

Some genres have been more popular than others and people have shown interest in more niches like portrait photography, which seems to be one of the most popular genres, landscape photography, night photography, and many more.

In this article, I outlined five different types of photography. And chances are, you might not be aware of these genres in photography.

Cityscape photography

Types Of Photography

Cityscape photography can be viewed as an artistic representation of a city or an urban environment. This type of photography goes back as far as the 18th century.

Cityscape is often compared to landscape photography. The only difference is that Cityscape photography is a representation of the physical elements of a metropolis, urban or suburban area, usually with a birds-eye view but not always the case.

Astrophotography

Types Of Photography

Also known as astronomical imaging, this genre is specific to astronomical objects or celestial events. The development of astrophotography was pioneered in the mid-19th century for the most part by experimenters and amateur astronomers. Because of technological evolution over the years, this genre has been perfected and the barrier of entry has been slimmed down a lot. Making it possible for the average photographer with a decent DSLR to capture some outstanding images.
This is a technical genre of photography that requires a very tedious process. From setting up your equipment, having the perfect settings, etc. Not to say that the other genres are not, however, this one requires a little more technique and lots of patience.

Femto-Photography

Types Of Photography

Ever thought about imaging a trillion frames per second? This is exactly what Femto-photography is, a technic allowing to capture and visualize the propagation of light at a very high speed.

With this technic, You can watch how photons interact with matter, and the way photons are absorbed. This genre proves to be very effective in the scientific field, helping scientists deconstruct the way light interacts with physical objects and more. You can read about Femto-Photography here.

Boudoir photography

Types Of Photography

Boudoir is glamor photography that showcases women in intimate settings and clothing. This style of photography started in the 1920s. Back then, nudity in photographs was illegal, so the act was quite risqué in itself. Through the 1920s and 40s, plus-sized, curvy models were often the focus of Boudoir photography, giving the “pin-up” girl look.
The images are sensual, romantic, and even erotic at times. Most boudoir photography is quite natural and classy in its approach of showing off the model. The client will wear nightgowns, lingerie, or even embrace her body in the nude during the photo shoot. The pictures are often for the model herself or a romantic partner.

Macro Photography

Types Of Photography

As the name suggests, microphotography is close-up photography of small objects or subjects. The term “photo-macrographs” was proposed by W. H. Walmsley back in 1899, for close up images with less than ten diameters.

And over the years, the name itself has changed to Macro Photography. When shooting micro subjects, there are a few things to consider, like Depth of Field, Lighting, and good focus skills. Much like Astrophotography, this genre also requires a lot of patience from the photographer since you cannot always keep your subject still or have the subject in your view field for X amount of time.

Photography has evolved over the years, and there are about 60 other photography types, if not more. The art form has helped and is still helping artists express themselves through their photographs and help others see the world the way they see it. The Artform is still evolving, and more genres will emerge because of the technological improvements made thus far.
