Whether you are an entrepreneur, social media influencer, online marketer, or you run a company, you need a mailing list for your business to thrive nowadays.
1. What is an email list you ask?
An email list is simply a list of emails that companies or online creators have collected from their supporters, website visitors, or customers.
Its purpose is to keep your audience up to date with your business.
This can range from company information, updates, discounts, referrals, and other details about your business in a digital format that is sent via email.
According to Campaign Monitor, you get $44 in return for every $1 you spend in email marketing, and the ROI is roughly 4400%, insane!
There is no surprise that with the widespread popularity and indisputable benefits of email marketing, the return on investment is massive. A well-thought-out email marketing strategy will make you some profit.
However, it is not just about profit, emails can also increase engagement. Gone are the days where your email marketing campaign needed to be limited to a newsletter format.
More engagement can be a sign that your audience cares about what you offer or what you have to say. Which inevitably helps to achieve your goals.
You can increase engagement by adding videos to your emails for example. According to Oberlo, adding videos to your email can increase click rates by 300%.
2. So who exactly needs a mailing list & why?
If you have something to say, if you provide a service, if you have a product to sell, you automatically need an email list, as long as you provide value.
Corporations or any type of business: As a company, you need to build trust with your partners, customers, or clients. Whatever your scale is, you need a system in place so you can build trust.
You build trust by establishing a communication system via your mailing list. In 2017, Statistica conducted a study showing that 49% of consumers would like to receive promotional emails from their favorite brands.
Online creators (Writers, Video creators…): Social media has definitely made it easier to reach a broader audience online. Whether you are an entertainer or a teacher, the reach you can have online is unimaginable.
Yet, you still do not have direct access to your audience because you rely on the social media platform.
If your social media platform of choice were to disappear today, you would lose all your audience because you would have no other way of reaching out to them.
Having a mailing list as a content creator provides an extra layer of security and freedom because you can reach your audience directly without a middle man.
Digital Marketer: This is a no-brainer. A Digital Marketer is a person leveraging web-based channels to spread a message about brands, products, or services to potential customers. The end goal could be brand awareness or monetary gain.
Online marketing differs from traditional marketing, which has historically included mediums like print, billboards, television, and radio advertisements.
Now that almost everything is done online, including marketing, it is crucial for every Digital Marketers out there to reach out to their potential audience and build trust.
Building an email list is crucial because it is the best way to build a solid relationship with potential customers. The more people you have on your mailing list, the more potential buyers see your marketing messages.
3. Why are email lists so effective?
Contrary to popular belief, email is not dead.
If email was dead, why does every social network ask for an email address before creating an account?
Why do most people still check email first thing in the morning?
You see, email might not win the popularity contest, but it remains crucial for most people because it remains a private and sacred tool for most people.
A person will be more reluctant to provide their email over their social media. That’s because email still holds a more important role in our day-to-day communication.
Email remains a professional yet private means of communication that’s tied to almost everything we do online. It is like the hub that connects us online.
If you think about it, your email is connected to that precious Netflix account of yours. The same goes for all your social media accounts, ie. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok… Your employer also has your email, whether for work or emergencies.
Oh, and that clothing brand that you like also sends you discount updates via email.
With an average of 4 billion daily email users, it is safe to say that an email is a powerful tool that any business should use.

– Things to consider before creating an email list
1. Get the right tool: You need to have the means of collecting people’s email addresses in order to communicate with them at once.
Typically, this is managed by a third-party application like Mailchimp, Aweber, Infusionsoft, or ConvertKit. These tools allow you to email hundreds or even thousands of people at once without the message going straight to the junk or spam folders.
2. Opt-in option: You need to get permission to sign them up for your list. You can also invite your audience to opt-in. You run the risk of spamming people if you do not follow this step. We all hate spam, don’t we?
3. Consider creating a website: Before you can collect email addresses, you need to have a platform where you can host a signup form. This is best done on your self-hosted blog or website. It will allow you to start collecting emails and communicating with your audience. You can also use platforms like Squarespace or Wix.
– Main Software you can use to create an email list
There are tons of options, but the ones that I recommend are Mailchimp and ConvertKit. Mailchimp is free for up to 2,000 subscribers, and it’s great when you are just starting.
But when you are serious about growing your list, I recommend ConvertKit because you have so many more options to grow your list while still being intuitive and easy to use. Their prices start at $24 per month, and they offer a 14-day free trial!
